Latest bipolar disorder research suggests that many people suffer from the disease as early as in their late teens or early adulthood. The DMH-IV (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 4th edition) has separated bipolar disorder into different categories: Bipolar I, Bipolar II, Cyclothymic, and schizoaffective. Bipolar disorder research finds that some of these disorders are very closely related, and many are hard to differentiate. Because of misdiagnoses, many patients go untreated for years. Because there are no definitive tests to diagnose the illnesses, physicians, therapists or psychiatrists must rely on symptoms, examples of manic and depressive episodes as reported by patient and others, and family history, when available.
Genetics
There is evidence, based on studies done with families, twins, and adoptees, that genetics definitely play a part in bipolar disorder research. NIMH started a genetics initiative in 1989, studying families with two or more siblings having bipolar disorders. Thanks to this initiative, there are major research facilities worldwide that are trying to isolate DNA for susceptibility of bipolar diseases. Other studies are occurring in Israel, America, and the Azores; information is already being collected from Australia and Sweden.
